  • Haus of Waft Quickie! Ways That Could Help You End A Funk

    Posted on by Aer Comment

We have all heard of the winter blues, but sometimes it just happens without frost in the air, even with a pretty little bluebird right outside your window. I’m no doctor, but I do know some possible ways to help lift your spirits.

    1. Wash your pillow or pillow case. Yes, even for you super clean freaks out there, sometimes an extra wash helps. Let’s say you always wash your pillow case and sheets on Sunday, but your feeling low on Wednesday morning, pop your pillow case in the washer, with a little white vinegar and lavender EO (or any EO that is safe and you like) added during the rinse cycle or whenever you put your liquid fabric softener in. That night you may find you feel a bit better, and there is an added bonus: Washing your pillow case a little more often may curb acne breakouts, it has been said that sometimes skin troubles can be caused by oil and bacteria on your pillows.
    2. Start a new hobby. Always wanted to build model planes or learn to prepare sushi? Do it. Now. Quit putting it off. Let’s rewind to about two years ago: I had a nasty Etsy addiction (love this place still). Buying crochet hats is one hell of a drug, and the money it cost…the things you have to do for it…ugh.  Anyway, I knew handmade knitted and crochet items are definitely worth the money considering materials and the the labor, but I just could not keep buying. And I was sort of in a funk, so one day I wondered into the depths of the interweb and found myself watching a video on how to crochet a simple line, and that was it, I was hooked. A lot of you may be deterred  on starting a hobby because of money, but in most cases you can still start in some way. I did not have a crochet hook, but after a few minutes with a piece of pine and a knife I had the ugliest, but kind of functional crochet hook.  So you don’t have the stuff yet to make a cherry pie because you want to bake, before you get the cherries and the nonstick pan, study some free online recipes. Take a few days to find the best recipe for you. Before I even made my hideous crochet hook, I watched tons of crochet videos just to learn. Learning is sometimes the best part of a hobby. With your hobby, don’t set major goals. Don’t swear you’ll know Cantonese in three months, just take your time, and let things flow, you may find more success this way. who knows, maybe in five months you might find yourself tackling Mandarin as well. I did not push myself to learn how to crochet a sweater in a month, and it has been two years and not only do I crochet, I knit and sort of weave. And it really lifted the low I was going through when I started.  I found something to do, and the ideas that ran through my head are what gave me some excitement. So go look up a video on interpretive dance and start trying to do jazz fingers!
    3. Listen to different music. No, I don’t mean listen to something cheerful, just take five minutes when your feeling blah and listen to something you don’t know. Karl from Karl’s Didgeridoo Shack who makes excellent incense, also came out with a didgeridoo album. I never thought to listen to didgeridoo music before and the day I got this wonderful gift from Karl, I was feeling bad, but then I listened to this album that day, and lit some incense, and wow, it was a different, intriguing experience for me, I felt better quick. You can too, aromatics and music together have always helped those I subjected to it. So you like, umm, that little guy with the bangs, who sings pop music these days, try looking up an old, old bluegrass song and spritzing some citrus oils in the air. Will you be cured? I’m not sure, but you definitely shouldn’t be bored and that is a step in the right direction. This can be done quickly in your car too.
    4. Talk to the cashier you have seen every week for the last year at your local dollar and nickel store. So you feel kind of crappy and you have to go pick up some processed cheese chips for your mom because she won’t get off your ass until you do, and you are checking out, ask the cashier how their day is going. Did they enjoy the weather this weekend? Do they have grandkids?  Talking small talk with a smile will not only possibly help you, but it maybe a kind thing to do for them. I did this once when the owner of this site demanded some type of Grade A potting soil for his planting of jasmines and so I had to go to the local dollar store. I ended up talking to the cashier and turns out he was way into Star Trek too, and he thought Klingon’s were way more awesome then Bajorns as well. And now I always have a pleasant experience at that store. And I did not feel like biting the owner of this site   right on the face anymore. That day. Give it try.
    5. Are you in a really bad low energy funk? It could be a health issue. Despite my heavy Crow heritage, I have really pale, light sensitive skin, so daytime outdoor playtime is pretty limited for me and I was not absorbing the necessary vitamins from the sun’s glorious rays. I started feeling bad and tired (I already had a preexisting disorder and thought it was that, getting worse). When I went for some blood test, it was found that my vitamin D was dangerously low. So I had to take supplements and after a few weeks, I felt more alive than I had in awhile. So if you feel tired, and bad, try some vitamin D and a doctor’s appointment. It could make a major difference. And of course, talk to your doctor before starting any new vitamins, supplements etc.
    6. Get your frankincense  on. Frankincense has been said to help with a wide range of emotional issues, people often burn the resin to dispel negative feelings and vibes. If you don’t feel like burning resin, get the essential oil and put a few drops in a pot of water on your stove and simmer without the lid, the scent should fill up your house or a least a room or two. Frankincense is believed to purify and with its evergreen, almost pine like notes, it has refreshing and clean perky scent.

I hope this was able to help someone out there, but of course you know that you should see someone if you are having severe depression symptoms . Slight moodiness or blues are normal for everyone and can usually be remedied with a few simple efforts and of course, natural aromatics!

  • Versace The Dreamer & Ranka (Orchid) by Shoyeido

I found myself digging through some boxes last Monday that I had placed some where in the deep depths of a dark hell, aka-my closet. As I clamored through everything, making sure it was three in the morning, and disturbing the household, I caught a smell from a little tattered cardboard box. It smelled like something a little alcohol like, “hmm, sweeeeet!” I thought as I tore open the flaps. After sifting through some papers, I came across a beautiful bottle with a goddess like face raised in glass and a Greek style pattern at the top of the bottle. “Oh, yes! The Versace I was given awhile back” I said loudly.
A few years ago my grandmother passed on.I was given some various this and thats to remember her by. For some reason, she had a bottle of men’s Versace, specifically Versace The Dreamer. I never figured out why she had this, as she was a strictly floral oriental type of lady, and I’m sure it wasn’t some sentimental action towards my grandfather that made her have this bottle. It was only about one fourth full, and why I packed it up is still a mystery.
It’s a oriental woody fougere fragrance, and it hints at sage, lavender, and tobacco. I smell the lavender right off, it’s a very manly lavender, and the citrus was just enough to make this a delight to my senses. There was floral, from the notes of rose and I’m guessing geranium? The only flaw I saw with the floral notes, is that when they are first on the skin, there are at times during the first five to ten minutes, a medium strength synthetic note, which so far has been apparent on every person I  have tested it on. The tobacco notes are not offensive to me, although I think tobacco notes in  perfumery are given a unfair judgement by some. People sometimes associate tobacco notes as cigarette or ashtray notes, and that’s not necessarily true. It is easy to relate those aromas together, since they share the same source. Yes, there are some perfumes that smell closer to a cigarette or cigar, but the majority of quality perfumers just play on the sweet and natural plant note tobacco. Sorry, I went somewhere else for a moment….
Anyway, Dreamer is nice, and was decent on me, The silage is ok, it doesn’t reach it’s invisible aromatic arms out and strangle anyone in a two to four foot radius . It lasted on my skin for roughly three to four hours, and cedar mingles with the tobacco and sweet citrus, with the  floral taking a rest in the background. This was all good with me, but I sprayed this on the owner of the site, and wow, it was nice. The tobacco and lavender rolled around on this guy, making you think of a serious man with laughter behind the eyes, at your cost. The tobacco notes stayed on him, and the cedar made waves after a hour or so.It is floral but this guy is all manly and such, and it worked well with him.
Now to the incense. I have one of the large boxes of Shoyeido’s Ranka. You may see it listed sometimes as one of their daily incenses, but is not in the
daily line (think Nokiba, Haku- un, and Kyo- noshiki .) This was one of my first Japanese incense purchases, way back in the day. I liked it then, but was always irritated by the subtlety. It is still subtle in my opinion, when compared to other Japanese incenses, which are usually described as that already. It’s basically a floral sandalwood, which I like alright. It wasn’t floral sweet, it was floral powdery, and it is nice for those times when you are kind of wanting to just zone off in a book or television. Don’t get me wrong, that doesn’t mean it’s inferior, or disinteresting, it’s just provides that sort of atmosphere for me. I would totally suggest it to those that are getting into Japanese incense because they heard of it’s less in your face trait.

  • The Essence of the Sex Pistols-A Note

In May this year, Sephora France started carrying a perfume called Sex Pistols ThePerfume (Le Parfum Sex Pistols), or God Save the Queen. I just now caught wind of this today, so I’m a little late on the game. I think it hits stores next month, just in time for me to buy a one for me, and one as a holiday gift for my dear cousin, who is a big fan of their music. It is described as having notes of leather (rocker leather? Is there a difference? There should be.), black pepper, in your face ambrette (this is hard for me to imagine, because even the most masculine like ambrette comes off as a lady like actress from the 40′s in my mind,) raunchy patchouli, (this I can see) , lemon, aldehydes, heliotrope, and the turbulence of  a prune, ( haha!). It all sounds pretty nice, and I look forward to smelling it soon. The house producing it is Etat Libre d’Orange, which honestly is a house I have never tried, so it will be a first for me.

  • Tibetan Jasmine-Stupa Dhoop

I wanted something Tibetan, not familiar, cheap, and Jasmine, so I was going to order Stupa’s regular dhoop, just labeled - Jasmine – in a little black drawstring bag, but I guess when I went to order it, I just saw Stupa and jasmine together and I figured it was all the same, so I ordered the Tibetan Jasmine in the blue flowery box instead. When I got it , I realized it was different from what I was originally trying to purchase. I don’t regret it though. This claims to be a all natural product, and after lighting it, I would say for the most part it is. However I think the almost hot pink color of the dhoop stick may not be from the ingredients, but from a color additive, probably a non-natural one. But this is fine because it did not interfere with the scent, so I see not real issues on that matter.
-Anyway, enough about that part, it doesn’t really matter.. .Then when you open the box, you may get a very subtle nutty wood smell, nice, but not special. It’s when its lit that it transforms into a fragrant little powerhouse of aroma. You get nutmeg and woodiness right off, sweetness from the nutmeg actually takes longer to make it’s self apparent. Then you get the jasmine, and it’s a odd jasmine, more green-sweet than floral or exotic, like if you were eating jasmine in a pie with spices. Like, I said odd, but I liked it. In some ways I liked it better than Chandra Devi’s Sandalwood and Jasmine mix, which is a very nice dhoop on it’s own that I might review soon.
My best friend Aaron came up from Florida. He never notices scents, its either no attention to a smell at all, or it if it smells bad, he just states, “something stinks”. I had this burning when he came up, and he walks in my bedroom, and says, “Wow, this room smells awesome. This stuff is the shiznit, what is it?”. He’s a man of few words. So I told him, and he made me promise to get him a bunch of it for his birthday, which I will. It is pretty cheap, like around $3 to 4 bucks loosely.
I can’t say this is the best Tibetan or jasmine I have ever experienced but I like it. It’s the type of incense you can burn if you want a relaxed but social and positively charged atmosphere. While I had my best friend, another friend, and my cousin visiting, I burned Stupa’s Tibetan Jasmine a good deal, and it provided a light hearted fragrant ambiance. This incense would be good for a carefree type of time, although those sensitive to medium or large amounts of smoke should probably avoid this dhoop.

  • An Introduction, Sort Of………

This is the Haus of Waft’s scent review page. In a sense it could be called a blog, but it really will be just covering the area of incense and sometimes perfume reviews. For now the reviews will just be done by me, Aer BlueWilson. Although I am very familiar with incense and it’s current market, I do want it known that just like any other human, I have preferences that may not match every readers tastes. I really like natural rose scents, and I know that some of my friends do not, so it is easier for me to give a positive review to, let’s say, Shroff’s Rose Masala for example, than it would be for my friend who dislikes rose smells too.
In fact on that note, I will mention the scents that I do like, to make it easier for others to understand where I am coming from. I love straight sandalwood, if it’s a decent quality, and no perfumes have been added. I like dark thick aromas of oakmoss, and I am fond of completely natural florals, like orris root, rose, geranium and jasmine. In any incense I look for the quality of the ingredients, I strive to stick to products that are natural, with no synthetics added. I really like agarwood blends, and the scent of the heavens to me includes old mountain sandalwood, tomato leaf, and bergamot . I do not care for scents that are very fruity or too sweet.Although citrus notes added to some  mixtures are nice. My exception of this is honey, and benzoin. Labdanum has my respect. Vanilla on it’s own bores me, but mixed with woods and stronger florals, I can like it.Most perfumes that would strongly fall under the gourmand category really don’t appeal to me, although there are exceptions Anything that reminds me of rubber will send me running, and I don’t like cannabis scented things, real or fake. Patchouli can be nice, but there are times that I may not like it.
I also will look at price of products. If something seems okay, but it isn’t great, and it is pricey, I will probably state it’s not worth the money. I thought about mentioning a product’s availability but I don’t think that would be fair to look at a item as lesser just because you can’t grab it at your local head shop. Some of my favorite incenses are a little harder to find, but I think they are worth the search and trouble. I know that once and awhile, I will think I don’t care for the scent of something, but after awhile I find that I do like it, and vice versa on that matter.
