  • Christmas is in the Air!

    pic found at: http://media.photobucket.com/image/christmas/talibland/Christmas/blueornamints.jpg

With scenes like these outside the door, and the allure of a warm fire or heater inside, its easy to find a reason to stay cozily wrapped up indoors with friends and family. The scents that we encounter around christmas are similar to those found at thanksgiving… the house full of the smell of a feast being prepared. But visually it is a lot different. Children seem to have more energy, running around and trying to hunt places that might be hiding gifts- giving them a little shake if they do find them. Cats and dogs in seasonal sweaters, not really sure how that one got started. And the whole house decorated for the day of honor, yule. This usually includes a tree, hopefully a real one that fills the house with that recognizable scent of fresh evergreen. We dress it up in lights and tinsel, and hope all the bulbs stay lit until it’s time to take them down. Other seasonal smells one might find… peppermint candy canes, gingerbread cookies or houses, any number of baked goods, and maybe even eggnog- one of my own favorite traditions.  And on the day of christmas eve, the excitement is palpable. Especially if their are children in the household. They really are what makes this holiday bright! And let’s not forget the candles burning festively, or the fragrant incense or clove spiked oranges, and the warm apple cider… and giving out presents on christmas morning! The way a child’s face light up when they open their gifts… that is what photo albums were made for.  So share this magical time with your family, and remember our Haus is your haus!

  • Winter Wonderland

Winter is almost here, one of my favorite times of the year. The cold, the chill in the air. I love the way the wind blows so strongly, sometimes it almost feels powerful enough to carry a person away with it. And the best part is when it snows, like in the picture above. There is nothing quite like the smell of fresh snow.. so clean and pure and fresh- one of my favorites, next to the smell of rain. Snow is so much nicer. It falls slowly and soundlessly to the earth, fluttering and finally finding a spot on the ground where it finds friends to gather next to. And its so quiet and peaceful, aside from the whistle of the wind, snowfall is so quiet. And the scent is so fresh and clean… so lovely as it settles on the ground like a big blanket. And of course, watching children playing in the snow is wonderful too- making snow angels, snow men, building forts and throwing snowballs. And their laughter and joy brightens the season… for what would the holidays be without children? Sadly as we grow up we forget the simple joy in everyday things, like snow and just enjoying being young. But the best part of the snow is being with family, and after playtime is over- going inside in the warmth of the home for a nice cup of hot cocoa.

  • So Much To Be Thankful For! Haus Special! (A Review on Haus Incense!)

Haus Special!-An Incense Review On The Watching Man & Golden Ground
I… like everyone else here at Haus of Waft, am very excited about the launch of the new store! We finally get the chance to share a bit of our passion with all of you, our dear readers/ followers! The items I’ll be reviewing are the two wonderful hand-made incense cones. I personally was very curious how incense was made, since the only kind I had ever seen was probably made in a factory somewhere, and not carefully crafted by hand… but alas, those are not my secrets to tell! But what I can tell you, is my interpretation of both kinds we currently offer.

    1) Watching Man- Sniffing the unburned incense, it smells a bit spicy, and has the woodsy elements that I really enjoy in incense… the patchouli of course draws me in. But at first blush as I call it- when I first lit it with my trusty stick lighter, I was carried back to a scene I described in brief detail in another article- where I’m walking through the woods / driving in a residential area, and I smell the perfume of smoke on the air, the burning brush- a pile of leaves.. but no simple pile of leaves could imitate such an intoxicating aroma! Throughout the burning, which was considerable for a cone- I had the sense that I was a wood nymph wandering into a camp fire, drawn by the flames.

    2) Golden Ground- This one is more spicy, and almost sweet- as if a few sweet spices were tossed like pixie dust into the campfire.  Before I burned it I could smell the spice mix more strongly… sweet like cinnamon and cloves… and other wonderful spices mixed in. When it’s burning, another generous cone amount- the sweetness doesn’t quite come through… but in a way it does. It almost smells like a spice cookie or cake caught ablaze!

If you asked me to pick a favorite between these two, and I’m not just saying this… it would honestly be a too- tough call to make. They are both so unique and mystifying, both incense yes, but each too different to really be compared. I’d say try each one, and let it carry you off to the forest for a while, and awaken the pyromaniac that dwells within us all!

  • Clean Scents on Aisle 7!

    pic found at: http://www.seventhgeneration.com/learn/news/toxin-talk-what-tell-your-kids-about-cleaning-products

As far as general scents go, I’m sure we’re all familiar with the grocery store aisles. My favorite, next to the cheap incense, is the cleaning and air freshener aisle. You can really get lost in there, trying to find a great room spray (and trust me, I have). I’ve literally spent as much as 30 minutes (maybe a tiny exaggeration), sniffing until I can smell no more, which doesn’t really take that long if you don’t take a break in between.

One issue I have is the label, which usually claims that the process is a 3 in one… not sure what the three is for… and it usually mentions essential oils, but when you turn the can around and read the ingredients, it might say  fragrance..  and a bunch of chemicals… maybe water, and no oil at all.

The second issue I have, is that the cheaper quality ones all fall into 4 basic categories… the fake powder smell, the fake water smell, the really fake floral smell, and my least favorite- the cheap citrus smell that smells like bad bread, to me at least. And there are also the odor eliminating smells.. to cover up the bad pre-existing smells.

Then you have the better quality high end air fresheners. Probably none of them have essential oils either, but the smells and aromas are broader, and some of them are actually very nice. I have one I adore, its a limited edition ‘hawaiian’ spray that smells like coconut, and a bit like pina colada… I love it! It almost smells good enough to eat. Then of course during the holidays they have scents available, and in candles too, such as gingerbread and peppermint / candy cane and apple cinnamon, and pumpkin spice. These are also delightful. It’s one of the things I look forward to for the holiday season. We all know the true purpose of a spray such as these is to cover up not so nice smells, but it’s nice when they can give us a bit of pep too, and help us wind down at the end of the day.  A fter all, a clean-smelling and welcoming home is a happy home.

  • Words Drenched in Scent: Patchouli and Me

I think there are certain reactions that fragrances cause. Sometimes a scent can take you back to a memory; like the perfume a mother would wear that would linger as she picked up her child… years later that child will recall that fragrance with fondness- they might not even know what the fragrance is exactly, just that it smells like home. Then there are scents so sweet that it makes your mouth water… scents that smell clean and pure. Smells that are feminine. Scents that embody things found in nature- flowers, trees… Then there are scents that call to you on a deeper level, ones that bring things out in you… a more animalistic and primal side… a scent that is nothing else but pure male arousal… that is what patchouli is to me.  That is what I love about the perfume Pan… it showcases patchouli in a way unlike anything I’ve ever smelled before, but I’ve not really smelled everything there is out there. I’ve only recently found my nose.. so to speak… but patchouli has always been special to me.

How would I describe it otherwise? Someone asked me a while back… if Pan was woody  smelling, what it smelled like. Patchouli is the key note in that fragrance, which is why I love it so much. What it does call to mind is something I mentioned in my scent of a man article… the smell of a man’s perspiration, the scent that is just pure male. It doesn’t really come from anywhere… it is just the natural scent of a man. That is how patchouli smells. It makes me want to put it on my wrists, take a deep sniff.. and just wrap myself around it… maybe curl into a ball on the bed and just let the smell take over

  • Wicked-A Lingering Spell

As you can see, baby grim was used in a spell. The candles pictured were natural beeswax candles, courtesy of Arabesque Aromas. They have s certain aroma to them, when not lit, that brings to mind light citrus… I’m not sure if that’s an actual fragrance, or as Aer explained… just the natural smell of unbleached beeswax. Either way, whatever your intended use of them is… they are divine!

  • Words Drenched In Scent-Learning to Fly,Meet Lil’ Grim, The Scent of Man

Learning to Fly-A Story Inspired by Dragon Incense Burners (Picture Above)

The first thing I remembered, was poking my head through my shell. I breathed for the first time, the air filled my nose… lungs… I opened my mouth and yawned reflexively. I wanted to explore the world outside, but all I did was close my eyes and sleep… being just born takes a lot out of you, I suppose. After a few days, I learned the basic mechanics- eating mostly… but as I watched Mother, she spread her wings and flew out of the nest and went to go get food for me and my brothers. So if she could fly, then I would be able to as well! I poked my head over the edge of the nest, looking around, and down… so far down! I definitely did not want to attempt flying now, unless I knew for certain that I would survive the experience. But as I was looking out, I felt strong winds against my face, and against the wing I tentatively extended outwards… just to check.  None of my brothers seemed as curious as me, they were still all huddled together in a cluster, waiting for the food to arrive. I couldn’t wait until I was able to fly! I hoped the day would come soon!

I noticed after a few weeks that I had grown a lot since I was born, I wasn’t as big as Mother yet… about a third of her size.  She gazed into my eyes for what seemed like a long time. I had a feeling that she sensed my curiosity. I stepped to the edge of the nest, and stretched out my wings as far as they would go, then I lowered them, and looked back at her. She looked behind me, where my brothers must have been huddled- but I didn’t look back. I kept my gaze on her, waiting for the slightest sign of acceptance. She gave a snort, a small puff of smoke came out of her nose… I would have to try that one later too. She gave me a small nod, and walked closer to me, then gave me a small tap on the head with her nose, which was all the encouragement I needed! I extended my wings again, and let the wind lift me, and I jumped from the nest into the bright blue sky. And I flew! and it felt amazing… the wind felt like arms lifting me up and carrying me through the sky. I felt so joyous…. so free! I could see a puff of smoke coming out of my nose, and I could feel this warmth radiating through my body… so I opened my mouth, and out came the flames! I happened to be high enough in the sky that nothing caught fire. I started to feel tired, like I had exerted myself too much today, so I flew back to the nest- where my brothers were all staring at me in awe, like I was a hero! Mother merely nodded, and hugged me close to her body with her wing.

Meet Lil’ Grim & Baby Grim

    Picture
    Picture

    Baby Grim
This is Lil’ Grim. He was born on October 28th, around 5am. He is a poppet, some might call him a voodoo doll. He was crafted by my own hands, carpal tunnel be damned, out of love, to serve a purpose. He is the newest member of the Haus of Waft… or at least my little dark corner of it! He was born of an old dish rag, and visually… I’d say a cross between Swamp Thing and that sac creature from A Nightmare Before Christmas… I’m thinking it’s Mr. Boogety… But I’m not sure about that… with a dash of Oscar the Grouch? Anyways… he’ll be making appearances here, perhaps quite often. Stay tuned.

The scent of a man…October 28, 2010 – 11:13 pmI’ve heard from a few sources, that the way a woman can find the right man is by his smell- if you smell his arm pits, and it’s.. pleasant… then he is the man for you. I know, it was a weird show… cooking show actually, go figure. But what the host was trying to convey, was about pheromones… a rather interesting concept. Perfumers and chemists have dabbled with the concept of pheromones for ages… with the idea that a certain scent / perfume could attract the opposite sex like a moth to a flame. While that concept seems a bit far fetched, it is intriguing.

Personally, I have found a few men’s scents  that really appeal to me… one of my new favorites is of course Pan by Perfumes by Nature… although I”m sure that’s not just for men…or at least I hope it’s not! The other is Fahrenheit by Christian Dior… I absolutely go nuts over that one… I used to have a small bottle by my desk here, so that I could dab it on my wrists and sniff every once in a while. And even Old Spice for that matter. They make a line of inexpensive deodorants and body sprays that smell very nice. There are some smells that are completely masculine… and the most intense one is the one that really isn’t even a perfume… just the way a man naturally smells when he’s been perspiring…well. That’s perhaps the best cologne of all.

  • For You, Deer

Aer-This is Words Drenched In Scent, although it’s set up like a blog, it is actually a fiction, sometimes not fiction, page, for descriptive writing about scents and Aroma by Liz Grimly. So I am introducing her! This is her first stories, enjoy, and feel free to leave feedback!

    Amber Waves
    October 24, 2010 – 10:33 pm
Amber is special to me, and it’s hard to explain why. I’ve read that it’s the fossilized sap of a tree, but I’m sure that it, like everything else it may not always be authentic. For instance… I bought a piece of jewelry with amber in it, or so it said. But regardless, one of the main appeals of it to me was, that it looks like something that was once alive.. and it was, many many years ago. It was once the pure life’s blood of a tree. For some reason it almost reminds me of fire, and as some of you may have figured out by now, that’s a plus for me. And it even looks like fire, the rich color that goes by the same name. The same name for some honeys.. so it always brings to mind a richness, but not decadent and frivolous, but earthy and pure.

And I had another piece of amber as well, this one was more natural… it was a cube about an inch wide, and I kept it in a small wooden box that it arrived to me in. I always loved to sniff the amber in its little box… the scent is almost like honey as well… so sweet and fragrant… they really don’t make enough adjectives to describe smells, and amber should have a name all its own. I can totally understand why someone first decided to make it into incense. Aside from the logical connection to trees and burning… I can almost picture someone taking in that sweet fragrance, and saying to themselves… ahhh. wow. now lets light this baby on fire!

    Samhain- Halloween

    October 19, 2010 – 3:20 pm
Halloween is without a doubt my favorite holiday. As a wiccan, it’s important- the last truly pagan holiday still embraced and celebrated. But aside from that, its easy to dislike everything it stands for. It’s been turned into a marketing cash cow- stores stocked with candy and costumes and ‘props’… a broom and a witches hat… do they even know what they’re for? Do they even realize how difficult they make it for those who truly love this religion? Ok, to be perfectly honest… I have more than my share of halloween candy every year. But what really breaks my heart, is that children can’t even go door to door begging for candy, for fear of their safety… in their own neighborhoods. If things were the idealistic way they are in my head, this holiday would be more about tradition… less about money… and alll about those cutely costumed little ones that are missing out.

Aside from the holiday itself, the whole season holds a certain mystery… allow me to explain.  If I’m out driving in my vehicle, and I leave the city area and move to the residential parts of town… its almost guaranteed that when I roll down my window, I’ll be bombarded by the delicious aroma of smoke.  Maybe it’s because of my wild pyro-maniacal roots, but every time I smell that smoke, which is probably someone burning a pile of lawn brush or leaves… it seems magical, mysterious.  I’ll lean my head out of my window and take as many deep breaths as I possibly can, because usually a few seconds down the road, the smoke is gone. But sometimes, if I’m lucky… I can trace the source of the fire, and watch for a few seconds. What is it about fire? Some ancient promethean sense of taming something wild, something that is the combustible transformation of matter into energy? Or maybe just because it’s just so pretty to look at. Either way, raise your lighters, light your candles and your incense, and if you dare, pay homage to a few little goblins if you get the chance… and enjoy Samhain!

    For you, Deer
    October 14, 2010
There is no time quite like the autumn… especially in the early morning. That is my favorite time- when the sun is starting to rise, and drops of dew cling to the leaves of the foliage… leaves that are a myriad of beautiful colors. The gentle cool breeze chases the leaves from their branches… scattering them and letting them fly, to finally rest on the forest floor. I love the sound they make when they crunch with every tentative step. I feel the wind pick up slightly, and the scent of the forest is carried along with it. The scent is always warm, with an underlying note of decay… but that is what nature does. The cycle of birth and life and death in all seasons, but the death is not the end… just a turn of the wheel.

I find a small cluster of berries, hidden under a bush… what a wonderful bounty. I tentatively reach out with my tongue to enjoy this feast. As I am doing so, I hear a rustling not far from me. Always on alert, my ears perk up… I stand still and wait for another sound. Then I see a flurry of leaves, and a small gray body jumps ahead of me. Brother rabbit wants a race, well… we’ll see who wins.

I take off with a leap, the wind whipping by… I easily avoid low hanging branches, small trees- I know every inch of this wood, this is my home.. my haven. I leap over a fallen log- we all heard you fall, brother. With ease, I bound past the much smaller rabbit. He never really had a chance. I race to the open meadow, pausing to feel the warmth of the sun… I don’t feel exhausted from the run at all, more invigorated than tired. I arrive at the fast moving spring, brother rabbit has saved a spot for me. I lean over and drink… it looks like a beautiful day.
